Assam

Tour of Assam takes place: Every April, during the springtime festival of Bihu

Places Visited: Golaghat – Majuli – Sribsagar – Kaziranga

Tour Summary:

Tucked away in the northeastern corner of India, the verdant state of Assam has retained a strong and self-sufficient character. During the Spring festival of Bihu, Assam explodes into a carnival of music, dancing, hospitality and abundance: a celebration of the very best of Assamese culture.

On our journey through this unexplored landscape, we’ll meet the monks who have developed Sattriya classical dance, drummers young and old who play all festival long in their neighbours’ front yards, the girls who perform the graceful Bihu dance, and experts who have a goldmine of stories to share with you.

Annie Smith came to Assam with Sound Travels in April 2013. Here’s what she had to say!

““Magical. This is the only word to describe the Assam trip. Each day was filled with music, dance, culture, and history. Being in Assam during the Bihu festival was thrilling and we were so warmly welcomed by the tea tribes and the Vaishnavite monks on Majuli Island. Sound Travels takes you far beyond tourism; you really get to know the people and the culture. Instead of observing, we were right in the thick of things, dancing and singing along with everyone. And of course we drank some of that famous tea straight from the source. You really can’t get this experience with any other travel company. I’m not sure a day goes by where I don’t think about what an amazing time I had – I am so grateful to Georgie, Gopal, and Som for the beautiful experiences and an unforgettable journey. “
